Three Alternative Communication Devices For Those Times When Cell Phones Won’t Work

Cell phones are out of range of an operating signal tower for more than seventy percent of the total surface of the earth. This is because the earth is more than seventy percent water, and your cell phones will not work at sea unless you are on a commercial liner that has its own cell tower or a naval submarine. When you also account for an additional twenty percent or so of the earth where you are on land and out of range of a cell tower, that is almost ninety percent of the globe where your phone will not work. Here are some alternative communication devices that can help you cover the gaps and open/ out-of-range areas where your cell phone will have zero bars.

Long Range Walkie-Talkies/ Push-to-Talk Devices

Long range walkie-talkies and push-to-talk communication devices have a greater range and can pick up on other channels when you are trying to find a signal. When you are lost in the middle of nowhere, a long range walkie-talkie or push-to-talk device can be picked up by ranger stations if you are within a certain number of miles. Since you will undoubtedly need the rangers’ help to find your way out of the wilderness or out of a blizzard, these devices become more invaluable when you plan to drive through a no-cellular zone.

CB Radios

CB radios that you install in your vehicle may help save your life too. The long range antennas on these devices can help you communicate with police cars, emergency vehicles and truckers on the road. Many people who drive very large pickup trucks often install CB radios in their vehicles too, as do tow truck companies and their drivers. If you cannot afford satellite radio, CB radio is the next best thing when your cell phone is dead and/or out of range.

Satellite Two-Way Radios

Similar to walkie-talkies, these radios rely on a system relay of signals. The difference here, however, is that satellite two-way radios use satellite transmissions to send and receive messages. If you have a fully charged, waterproof satellite two-way, you could be lost on a deserted island and still make contact with someone within a twenty-four hour period when the satellites in orbit move overhead and a ship gets within range. The satellite radio in some vehicles works this way, which is why it might be a good idea if you are traveling great distances on land through phone dead zones.

How To Stop Others From Using Your Router

You may notice that your Internet slows down to a crawl whenever your next door neighbor comes home from work. It could be a coincidence and simply the result of a greater demand being placed on the network, but it could also be the result of your neighbor gaining access to your Internet connection and using up your bandwidth. Fortunately, there are ways to identify if this is the case.

Check Your Modem Lights

Turn all of the computers in your home off and to look at the lights on your modem. If the lights are solid, this would indicate that no one is currently accessing your router. However, if one of the lights is blinking, someone may still be accessing your modem, indicating that someone is stealing your Internet.

Find Out Your IP Address

The first step is to know what your IP address is so that you can differentiate it from any other IP addresses trying to access your network. Simply run the “Run” program and type “ipconfig.” Your IP will start with IPv4 and will be followed with a string of numbers.

Access Your Router

Sometimes, you can check your router’s log depending on the type of router you own. Some routers also come with software that makes it easier for you to check your log. You can then see who is logging onto your computer. You can access the router by typing in the IP address of your router. If you aren’t sure what this is, this information may have been provided with your modem. Also, when you typed in “ipconfig”, the IP will be listed under “Default Gateway.” Your router will come with a default username and password you must enter.

There is usually a tab that reads “attached devices.” Look through the list of IP addresses to determine if any do not match your IP address. If so, there is someone else using your Wi-Fi. Then, you can setup a new WEP key so the user will no longer have the password to login to your computer. Your router will reboot and the other user will then be kicked off of your router.

Turn Off Broadcasting

To make it even harder for other users to access your modem, turn off broadcasting. This is a setting that is found on the router setting’s page. Make sure that the checkbox “Enable SSID Broadcast” is not checked. Then, you’ll have faster Internet speed because no one will be stealing your Internet.

New Perks For The Old School: 3 Awesome Ways The Internet Benefits Today’s Seniors

Many senior citizens have discovered that the internet is an incredibly helpful tool that allows them to pay bills, keep in touch with loved ones, and shop for goods and services from the privacy and convenience of their homes.

There are 3 ways the internet further benefits older Americans in ways that seniors from the past would envy:

The internet is the key to finding encore careers.

While an average of 65% of seniors being online today, only 20% of low-income seniors are using the internet. This is significant, because those unconnected seniors living in poverty would be able to use the internet to find jobs or online work if they wanted to continue earning wages.

Many available positions can only be accessed online, and most corporations hiring workers expect them to fill out their applications on the internet.  Quite a few jobs also require workers to use the internet as part of their job description, and every worker should at least know how to send and receive e-mail correspondence. Any senior who wishes to find a new job clearly needs internet skills to achieve that goal.

16% of seniors are remaining in the workforce, but they don’t necessarily need to leave their homes to stay employed. Working online is an excellent option for seniors who still have sharp skills but who may also have mobility issues. There are work-at-home positions for everyone from accountants to travel agents. With an internet connection, a senior can augment their Social Security and pension payments to live more comfortably and securely.

Finding love in the golden years is easier on the web.

Studies show that 43% of adult seniors feel socially isolated. Having access to the internet helps seniors feel involved in the world. They can look for love and find friends to provide that all-important human connection. Seniors have seen their younger family members find romance through online dating sites and chat rooms. Their younger relatives may even encourage seniors to dip their toes in online matchmaking sites. Today, the need for senior romance and socialization has been met by several new sites geared toward more seasoned partner seekers.

Online dating is a great way for seniors to meet new people and find their special someone. Informal, getting-to-know-you chats take place without the awkwardness of meeting in person. Potential companions can be researched online through social media and search engines, giving wary seniors more confidence to trust new friends they meet online.

Shy seniors learn about delicate subjects.

After they find dates online, seniors often have questions about the less romantic aspects of their love lives. Many older Americans were raised to keep mum about human sexuality. They may not feel comfortable about discussing issues they are having with sex or relationships. They may even feel shame or embarrassment.

But seniors need counseling and medical advice on their sex lives every bit as much as younger lovers. They need to understand STDs, safe sex, and other common problems they may encounter when they become sexually active again.

For seniors who have been out of the dating pool a while, having access to valid online sex advice is vital to keeping themselves physically and emotionally healthy. Fortunately, online medical sites are meeting that need. Seniors are using these sites to anonymously find answers to the most sensitive questions, protecting their privacy and their dignity.

To keep their internet running smoothly, it’s important for seniors to find remote tech support for seniors.  Be careful not to fall for tech support scams, but find a competent, ethical tech support company that will keep you online, whether you’re searching for a paycheck or a partner.

Keys To A Good Graphic Design

Communication can be tricky. On the one hand, a toddler can communicate complex ideas with a high rate of success. On the other hand, there are times when toddlers and even the best communicators can fall short in attempts to communicate. In an effort to communicate as seamlessly as possible, visuals can be a good help—as long as you know what you are doing.

Universal Meaning

The first key when you choose to use a visual is to make sure that it will have meaning to someone beyond yourself. Certain shapes such as an octagon, which can represent the need to stop, can be helpful in communicating an idea. Colors can have meanings such as white for peace, red for stop, green for go, and so on. Animals can also have meaning. A lion can represent courage, an eagle can represent freedom, and so on. Tapping into well-known symbols will help to make your messages more intelligible.

Communicating without Words

In some cases, words can get in the way or create visual clutter. For example, if you are sending out a message that will need to be read by people with various cultural backgrounds, then there is the chance that people will speak different languages and that writing words in any language will exclude people who speak another. Using images to represent actions, objects, and so on will help you to communicate to everyone who sees your message no matter what their cultural background is.

The Power of a Logo

When you try to represent a business, a name can go a long way, but a symbol can be just as powerful. In the same way that pictorial representations of an action can communicate the idea to people of diverse cultural backgrounds, so too can a symbol represent a company in a global market. The right symbol or logo can give your company visibility that you simply could not find in any other way.

If you are looking for a way to communicate instructions for a product, a logo for the same product, or simply a way to add depth to some abstract ideas in a research paper, visuals can help. On the other hand, you need to know what you are doing, and you can’t just make it up as you go. If you need a new visual in a pinch, you should hire a graphic designer who will work with you to bring your new ideas to life. Contact a company like Conway Office Solutions for more information.

Difference Between The DJI Phantom 3 Professional And Standard Models

The DJI Phantom 3 Series is a popular prosumer aerial drone system. It is one of the more popular series because it includes a built-in camera, stabilizer and live HD monitor. However, there are a few differences between the Phantom 3 Professional and the Phantom 3 Standard. Here is a basic explanation of the features and different specs and characteristics of the two models.

Both the Standard and Professional models have the same build and cosmetic design. The drone, the controller and the camera all look exactly the same. They are both also equipped with a 3 axis gimbal. The gimbal is basically a robotic stabilizer for the camera. It ensures that your shots are smooth because it prevents the camera from having sudden jolts.

The DJI Phantom 3 Standard

The DJI Phantom 3 Standard costs just $800. This includes the camera, a battery, the controller and few other small accessories. It is the newest and most affordable in the 3 series. The most notable absence is the live-view monitor. However, there is a mount for a smartphone. To use the standard in Live View Mode, you need to run an application on your smart phone or tablet. Currently, the app is only offered in iOS. So if you have an iPhone, you basically have a free monitor already. The Standard camera can shoot up to 2.4k HD video, which is quite impressive for the price.

The DJI Phantom 3 Professional

The Professional model comes with all the same accessories and supplies as the Standard. The main difference of the Professional model is 4k HD capabilities of the camera and the $1300 price tag. The Live View Mode can be similarly run through an app on a smart device. Of course, you can buy packages that include a monitor. Many professionals prefer having a separate monitor as opposed to using their smart device. With a monitor, you can free up your phone and you also have the ability to change the batteries for the monitor while on a shoot.

Flying a drone is exciting, even if you are not even running a camera. If you are just getting started in drone photography, you will probably find that the Standard is perfectly suitable for your needs. The beefed up specs of the video on the Professional are mostly needed for high end productions that experienced drone photographers often need. But it can compete with much large, more expensive drone systems.

3 Keys For Buying A New Copying Machine

Throughout the course of your business, it is vitally important that you stay on the edge of technology and always purchase equipment that will help you get the job done. In this regard, you should purchase a copy machine that will allow you to be as productive as possible in your workplace, so that you are able to keep your business running efficiently. In this regard, follow these tips for buying a copy machine and use them wisely.

Tip #1: Always Go Digital Whenever Possible

To be sure that your copy machine serves your business efficiently, you’ll need to consider the purchase of a digital machine. These machines are much quieter, they operate faster and don’t have the same number of moving parts that traditional analog machines do. You’ll also be able to enjoy things like internet connectivity and higher quality images when you purchase a digital machine. Additionally, these machines are much easier to integrate with your other forms of technology, such as laptops, smart phones and tablets. By purchasing a digital machine, you’re giving your company the newest and best technology available.

Tip #2: Know The Specifications To Key In On

As you shop for the right copying machine, it pays to key in on specifications that will serve your business well. For instance, the copying capacity refers to the volume of jobs that your machine can handle. This need will vary greatly based on the output of your business, so take inventory of the amount of paper that you use on a monthly basis when you are looking to determine what will suit you. You’ll also need to pick an ideal copier speed, which can depend on how urgently you’ll need copying jobs. For instance, if you routinely need to put together thick, last minute business presentations, you owe it to yourself to focus on a greater speed.

Tip #3: Shop Various Manufacturers And Price Match

Since you have plenty of options for your purchase, you should shop around at a number of businesses. Get all estimates and quotes in writing. You can then use these quotes to compare prices amongst the various retailers. That way, you can get the best deal for your budget. Make sure that you purchase a warranty on the machine to cover repairs and maintenance throughout the course of new ownership.

Follow these guidelines and use them as you shop for the right copy machine for your business. If you need more help, consider contacting a professional like those at ABC Office Equipment.

Balancing A Network For Mobile VOIP

Mobile Voice Over Internet Protocol (MVOIP) is a convenient spin on the already powerful VOIP technology. It enables businesses, teams and individuals to bridge the gap between the completely mobile, yet sometimes costly cell phone connections and the stationary restrictions of using a desktop or laptop to make calls. As you look through your communications situation, consider a few ways that MVOIP could make a difference.

Break Away From Traditional Phone Numbers

One thing to understand about VOIP is that it’s more than just telephones on the Internet. It’s a different way of communicating that uses different configurations and methods to change your voice into data and back into voice for others to hear.

You don’t need to use a phone number with VOIP. It’s convenient when contacting a world that still relies on traditional landlines out of tradition and popularity, but there are many other ways to communicate. Many VOIP programs utilize user names, email addresses or other forms of identification to bring their users together.

To make it easier, many of these options can provide a traditional phone number and other phone-like services to keep things simple for your friends, family and colleagues who are still stuck in the landline world.

You can extend this usefulness to mobile devices. With so many phone plan options, you may decide to take advantage of a plan with unlimited data (or a large amount of data, depending on the phone carrier). With these carriers, you could simply load up your mobile VOIP program of choice and start talking away. No need for a phone number that may expire when your plan runs out of if you lose your phone.

In most situations, a VOIP connection does not consume a lot of data. This needs to be measured before using it as a main form of communication, keeping in mind that it shares the same payload of data as everything else on your phone. Checking emails, watching videos, listening to music, updating apps or even passively checking for updates can add to the amount used.

Internal Communications Become Easier

For most people, the restraints of data plans become a non-issue once you’re at home or at work with wireless Internet. Unless your Internet Service Provider (ISP) has a data cap or maximum amount of data that can be used, you’re free to talk as much as you want while in the confines of your own network.

You may notice that the consistency of the call quality is better while on a dedicated network. On cellular data networks, your phone has to communicate with a relay network of antennas throughout your area.

Although the relay is very fast, there is still a chance that your data can be lost in tiny snippets that are too short to be reflected in signal quality, resulting in a few delays. Wireless Internet has the same issue, but the travel distance is shorter and there are hopefully less people on your wireless network than the local area cellular network.

Contact an MVOIP professional to begin planning an indoor and outdoor communications plan that fits your needs.
